Rao Bahadur brings together actor Satya Dev and director Venkatesh Maha once again. The movie created good interest before its release because of its unique promotional campaign and unusual concept. But does it offer a satisfying experience? Here’s our review.
Story:
The story takes place in 1991. Bhuvanam Ramappa Rao Bahadur (Satya Dev) is diagnosed with lung cancer, and doctors believe he has only four months to live. Surprisingly, he survives much longer than expected, leaving both his family and doctors confused. As time passes, Ramappa starts behaving in unusual ways, making his close friend and family doctor Narayanachari (Vikas Muppala) wonder what is happening. Ramappa then begins searching for an important truth that has been troubling him. What is he looking for, and does he finally find the answer? The rest of the film revolves around this mystery.
Performances:
Satya Dev delivers another impressive performance and carries the film with ease. He portrays a range of emotions naturally, and his makeover suits the character perfectly. His dedication to the role is clearly visible throughout the movie. Deepa Thomas performs well in a meaningful role. She shares good chemistry with Satya Dev, and her emotional scenes feel genuine. Vikas Muppala does a neat job as the family doctor, while Bala Parasar provides a few entertaining moments with her light-hearted performance. The supporting cast also plays their parts effectively.
Technical Aspects:
Director Venkatesh Maha adopts a different storytelling style, combining mystery with psychological drama. While the idea is interesting, the screenplay lacks enough gripping moments to keep the excitement alive throughout. A tighter script could have made the film much stronger. Karthik Parmar’s cinematography sets the right mood for the story, and Smaran Sai’s background score stands out, adding emotion and suspense to several scenes. The production design successfully recreates the early 1990s setting. However, the editing could have been sharper, as a few lengthy scenes slow down the overall pace.

Rao Bahadur is an honest attempt to tell a different kind of story. It succeeds in creating curiosity and features an excellent performance from Satya Dev. The supporting cast, music, and production values also add to the film’s strengths. However, the slow narration, lengthy screenplay, and delayed progression of the central mystery reduce its overall impact. The twist in the latter half may not work for everyone, and some repetitive scenes affect the engagement. Overall, Rao Bahadur is a decent, slow-paced mystery drama worth watching mainly for Satya Dev’s performance and its unique storytelling. Viewers who enjoy thoughtful and unconventional films may appreciate it more than those looking for a fast-paced entertainer.
