Story:
Thalapathy Vetri Kondan (Vijay) is serving a prison sentence for certain reasons. Eventually, a jail officer grants Thalapathy permission to see his mother. However, the officer faces punishment for this act. Upon learning this, Thalapathy visits the officer’s home. Due to subsequent dramatic developments, the responsibility of the police officer’s daughter, Vizhi (Mamitha Baiju), falls on Thalapathy. He raises and protects her like his own shadow, affectionately known as Thalapathy. His wish is to make her an Army officer. Who is responsible for the origin of this wish? What is the role and target of John Himlar (Bobby Deol)? What is Thalapathy’s past? The answers to the questions form the rest of the story.
Performances:
Vijay is in his true form and delivers an amazing performance. His action grace in key sequences and acting in emotional scenes are major highlights of the entire movie. Fans looking for high visuals, wild action, and emotional elements will find Vijay mesmerizing the audience with powerful variations in his performance. Bobby Deol fits seamlessly into his role as John Himlar, delivering strong performances in key scenes. Mamitha Baiju brings depth to her character and lives in the role. Heroine Pooja Hegde acts very well, and her screen presence is impressive. Prakash Raj and Sunil in key supporting roles catch the eye, while Priyamani and the rest of the cast perform well within their respective spaces.
Technical Aspects:
Cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan does an exceptional job, beautifully capturing key sequences and action blocks to match the narrative. Anirudh Ravichander delivers good songs with fine picturization, paired with an engaging background score. Editing is neat, and producer Venkat K. Narayan maintains uncompromised, magnificent production values. H. Vinoth fails to do complete justice as both writer and director, struggling with treatment and slow execution in several parts.
Review:
Released as a mass action and emotional drama, Jana Nayakudu fails to fully impress. Even though the film holds strong emotions and conflicts, they fail to establish themselves strongly enough for the audience to genuinely involve themselves. Coupled with missing interesting elements in the second half, the movie ultimately falls short of expectations despite a few appealing segments for Vijay’s fans.
